Derek Balls Scholarship 2017 awarded
This year’s Derek Balls Scholarship, which was established in 2015 in memory of Derek Balls, has been awarded to Dan Rose-Bristow FIH MI, managing director of The Torridon Hotel, Scotland. The prestigious Derek Balls Scholarship is awarded to a Master Innholder that has shown great contribution to the wider industry and is self-motivated to progress their own professional development.
Derek Balls was the co-founder and honorary patron of the Master Innholders, which was launched in 1978, and a former Master of the Worshipful Company of Innholders. Balls also helped found the Master Innholders Charitable Trust in 1991, with the sole purpose of providing high-level management education and supporting industry initiatives.
The Master Innholders took the decision in the wake of Derek Ball’s death in 2014 to mark his passing with the launch of the Derek Balls Scholarship, an opportunity to attend Cranfield University’s School of Management Directors Programme.
The scholarship is funded wholly by the Master Innholders and once potential candidates have been identified, they are approached to determine their willingness to be considered for selection. The potential candidates, chosen by the Executive Committee, are interviewed by a panel consisting of two members of the Master Innholders Executive Committee, a past chairman and Dr Veronica Burke from Cranfield University.
Speaking of the scholarship, Rose-Bristow said: “I’m very grateful that I have been chosen for this brilliant opportunity to learn at Cranfield University. My specialities have always been finance management and this programme will help me utilise my current skills set to provide a greater strategic perspective on the business, as well as provide practical solutions to change and innovation. As the industry is continuously involving, I think it’s so important to continue to challenge and develop ourselves to ensure that we keep pushing to be at the top of our game.”
Stuart Bowery FIH MI, chairman of the Master Innholders, adds: “I think it’s brilliant that the Master Innholders celebrate the legacy of Derek Balls with this annual scholarship. Dan is a exemplary role model as a Master Innholder to the industry.
“The Master Innholders will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year and I look forward to honouring Derek Balls throughout the celebrations.”
Rose-Bristow joins past scholars Tim Hassell FIH MI, co-owner of Ilsington Hotel on Dartmoor and estates director for Thurlestone and Mullion Cove Hotels, and David Taylor FIH MI, chief operator officer for Principal, in the Derek Balls Scholarship alumni.
The Master Innholders Executive Committee is currently identifying candidates for the 2018 Derek Balls Scholarships, with the shortlist being interviewed in the autumn.
