Over the past 10 years Harry, in his capacity as a Director & Patron, has tirelessly supported the Edge Hotel School; a hospitality dedicated element of the university that provides students with hands on experience in a real 4-star hotel – the Wivenhoe House Hotel, which is located within the campus grounds.

The Edge is the UK’s first hotel school and was founded by The Edge Foundation, in partnership with the University of Essex University, and was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Kent in 2012.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony Forster, said of Harry’s degree: “Harry was nominated because of his continued dedication to and support of the Edge Hotel School. His charity work and commitment to education are admirable. By joining our students at graduation, Harry will show them that, with drive and determination, they too can change the world.”

He continued: “Becoming an honorary graduate is not just about inspiring a new generation of students and graduates. It is about honouring how hard Harry has worked, the lives that he has changed, and his impact on the world. At Essex, we want to recognise this.”

Harry has been recognised with numerous awards for his tireless efforts to raise standards of excellence and to inspire the next generation of hoteliers. His awards include Catey Hotelier of the Year, Catey Lifetime Achievement Award, AA Lifetime Achievement Award, Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Award, and in 2006 an MBE for services to the hospitality industry.

Speaking about this latest honour, Harry said: “I am delighted, proud and honoured to be recognised by the University of Essex with this degree.”

Jane Pendlebury, CEO of HOSPA, commented on the news: “Harry is a perfect role model for the hospitality industry and it’s why we’re so proud to have him as President. What he’s achieved in his career really is remarkable. We’re delighted that he’s being recognised by the University of Essex and it’s thoroughly deserved!”
