Master Innholders Community Spotlight – Kodey Hamblin
We've recently been speaking with members of the Master Innholders community to find out more about their hospitality careers, what working in hospitality means to them, as well as what they are doing currently to give back to the industry as part of their work.
This week, we spoke to Kodey Hamblin, Guest Service Manager at Pentahotel Reading and student of this year’s Master Innholders Aspiring Leaders Diploma cohort. Kodey shares what she is most looking forward to on the Aspiring Leaders programme, what inspired her to pursue a career in hotels, as well as what she loves most about hospitality.
What inspired you to pursue a career in hotels?
I’ve been working in hospitality since I was 18, and I very quickly realised how much I loved it. Every day is different, it’s fast-paced, and you get to meet so many different people, it’s what really sparked my passion for hotels. I loved being part of that environment and wanted to understand more about how everything works behind the scenes. Since then, I’ve been really driven to grow within the industry and learn across different areas of hotel operations.
What do you love most about working in hotels?
For me, it’s the people. Both the guests and the team. I love building relationships, especially with regular guests, and being part of creating a really positive experience for them. At the same time, working closely with a team and seeing people grow in confidence is just as rewarding. It’s such a people-focused industry, which is what makes it so enjoyable.
Why did you apply to become an Aspiring Leader?
I applied because I’m at a stage in my career where I want to keep developing and push myself further. I’ve built a strong operational background, but I’m really keen to grow more strategically, particularly in areas like finance and leadership. The programme felt like the perfect opportunity to learn from experienced people in the industry and gain a wider perspective.
How does it feel to be part of the next cohort of Aspiring Leaders?
It honestly feels amazing. I’m really proud to have been selected, especially knowing how competitive it is. It’s also really exciting to be part of a group of like-minded people who are all passionate about hospitality. I’m looking forward to learning from everyone and getting stuck into the programme.
For those looking to apply for the Aspiring Leaders Diploma next year, what advice would you give them?
Just go for it. It’s easy to doubt yourself, but the best thing you can do is be genuine and show your passion for hospitality. You don’t need to have all the answers — they’re looking for people who are willing to learn and develop. Also, be yourself in the interview; that’s what will make you stand out.
Now you are an Aspiring Leader, what part of the programme are you most looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to developing my understanding of the commercial side of the business, particularly finance, as that’s an area I’m keen to grow in. I’m also excited to learn from experienced leaders in the industry and to meet others on the programme, as I think that mix of learning and networking will be really valuable.
What is your favourite part about working in hospitality?
Definitely the variety and the people. No two days are the same, and there’s always something new to learn. I love that you can make a real difference to someone’s experience, even in small ways, and at the same time be part of a team that’s working together to deliver something great.
