Applications open for coveted GM of the Future award

The next generation of promising hoteliers have a unique opportunity to receive a scholarship worth over £11,000 for a leading management and leadership course through the GM of the Future award, which is now open for applications.

Created by the Master Innholders and now in its 6th year, the prestigious award is granted to the applicant who demonstrates significant management potential within the hotel management industry and showcases a passion and desire for the world of hospitality.

Along with being awarded a trophy and the coveted GM of the Future title, the successful candidate will receive a fully funded scholarship worth over £11,000 at Cranfield University to participate in the Talent Development programme. This programme aims to support winners in their journey to become a hotel general manager or an equivalent and acts as a recognition of their talent within the industry.

Composed of both collaborative discussions and coaching, the programme also offers two five-day residential modules, as well as two reviews to assess the participants’ progress. Key areas covered include organisational awareness, effective leadership, strategic mindsets and emotional intelligence.

The runner-up will also receive a place on Cranfield University’s Impact and Influence programme, as well as six coaching sessions. The Impact and Influence programme will support the runner-up in preparing for a future in management by teaching them how to engage with their peers and communicate their ideas effectively, as well as educating them on key concepts related to business management.

To apply for the GM of the Future Award, you must submit an application form which includes an endorsement from a line manager. Applicants will need to demonstrate their expertise and passion for the industry, with questions focused on leadership, innovation and giving back.

A shortlist of applicants will be drawn up by the panel of judges that includes hotel leaders and industry experts. Judges this year include the Chair of the Master Innholders, James B. Clarke MI, Vice Chair of the Master Innholders, Zoe Jenkins MI, Hotelier of the Year 2024, Gareth Banner MI, 2025 GM of the Future Winner, Brigitta Kovacs and Executive Secretary of the Master Innholders, Alistair Sandall.

Those shortlisted will receive a complimentary ticket (additional guests will need to purchase their tickets separately) to the 2026 Hotel Leadership Conference, which will take place 19-20 January at the London Hilton on Park Lane. The winner and runner-up of the award will be announced during a special presentation at the black-tie dinner on the evening of the first day.
