Master Innholders Community Spotlight - Chris Turner
We've recently been speaking with members of the Master Innholders community to find out more about their hospitality careers, what working in hospitality means to them, as well as what they are doing currently to give back to the industry as part of their work.
This week, we spoke to Chris Turner, Hotel Manager at Dakota Newcastle and one of our finalists for the GM of the Future, The Neil Banner Scholarship. Chris shares what it is like to be shortlisted for the award, his aspirations for the future, as well as his advice for those just starting out in the industry.
What inspired you to pursue a career in hotels?
I’ve been drawn to hospitality for as long as I can remember. It combines service, creativity and leadership in a way that few other industries can. From the outset, I was motivated by the opportunity to create special experiences for guests where I could be part of moments they would remember.
What do you love most about working in hotels?
The energy of hotels is captivating. They’re fast-paced, dynamic environments with people at their core. I’m continually motivated by the ability to positively influence both guests’ experiences and the team creating them. Be it delivering a flawless stay, supporting a team member's development or solving a challenge in the moment, the pace and variety in hotels keep it challenging, relevant and hugely rewarding.
Why did you apply for the GM of the Future Award?
The GM of the Future Award recognises operational excellence, values-led leadership and the development of people with a genuine passion for the industry. Having celebrated a decade with Dakota Hotels this year, progressing through multiple operational and leadership roles, I felt it was an appropriate point to reflect on my experience and challenge myself to the next level.
How does it feel to be on the shortlist for the GM of the Future Award?
It’s an incredible honour to be shortlisted. Recognition from Master Innholders carries real significance, and I see it as an acknowledgement of the teams I’ve worked alongside as much as any personal achievement. Being shortlisted is a testament to the commitment I’ve given to my career so far, but also reinforces my responsibility to keep improving and contributing to the future of our industry.
What qualities do you think define a great General Manager?
A great General Manager must be incredibly organised and lead with clarity, consistency and empathy. They create a culture where people feel accountable, motivated and supported through setting clear standards without losing sight of those delivering them. Most importantly, a great General Manager understands that success is a result of the simple things done brilliantly.
Can you share a moment in your career that you're particularly proud of?
Being a part of the opening team at Dakota Newcastle stands out as a defining moment in my career. Relocating to lead the operational opening of a new hotel required trust, resilience and a clear understanding of Dakota’s values. Building a strong leadership team, embedding culture from day one, and successfully launching the hotel was immensely rewarding.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in hotels?
Say yes to opportunities, even when they feel daunting. Having a strong mentor and being open to feedback is where real growth happens. Never underestimate the value of learning every department within a hotel and remember that passion and enthusiasm flick the switch!
What are your aspirations for the future of hospitality?
Hospitality has given me an incredibly rewarding career so far and I hope for an industry that continues to invest in its people by creating clear and inspiring pathways for career development. I want to play my part in shaping environments where teams feel supported, valued and proud of what they do.
Share something that gets you through your day - is to coffee, a podcast, or something else?
Coffee is a non-negotiable, although nothing energises me more than spending time with the team. Those daily interactions and remaining connected to the operation always set the tone for the day and remind me why I love what I do.
The winner of the GM of the Future, The Neil Banner Scholarship will be announced during the evening of the first day at the Hotel Leadership Conference, taking place 19-20 January at London Hilton on Park Lane. Find out more here.
