What to know about Innholder Scholarships – An Interview with Grant Campbell MI SJS
Following his appointment as the Innholder Scholars chairman and the opening for applications of this year’s Innholder Scholarships, Grant Campbell MI SJS shares his advice on those looking to apply this year, as well as what he has taken away from his own time on the course.
Why are the Innholder Scholarships such an important scheme for promising hoteliers?
The development pathways for our industry are so varied and this highlights the incredible breadth of what is available. With that said, the Innholder Scholarships truly are a unique opportunity for hoteliers looking to that next important step in their career. It’s a way for individuals, regardless of background, to accelerate their learning in the industry, helping to position you as leaders in the field, with knowledge and experience that remains with you throughout your entire career.
To get the most out of the Innholder Scholarship, however, it does require a great sense of commitment. The education provided to you is incredible, but I would stress engaging and networking with your peers and industry individuals you will meet is equally as important.
What advice would you give someone looking to apply for an Innholder Scholarship?
My main piece of advice would be not to rush the application process. Each year the judges receive numerous entries, so you want to ensure your entry is the best it can be to stand out among the competition.
I would also stress the importance of being aware of current industry trends and the general market and being able to demonstrate how both you and your team are adapting to these changes. A big part of the Innholder Scholarships is also demonstrating your passion for the industry and how you give back, so ensure you can showcase your commitment to this spirit of giving back.
What do you remember the most from your experience studying as part of your Innholder Scholarship?
It was a challenging but immensely rewarding experience being able to attend Cranfield University for my studies. I had the opportunity not just to learn how management is applied in the hotel industry, but also in a range of other industries and what they can teach us about management in hotels.
Some of the changes that I made in my management style happened quite quickly allowing for a much better performance and balance to my work life. Many other aspects are still developing but there are numerous key elements from the course that I still apply to this day.
What is one piece of knowledge/advice you took from the course that you still apply to your work today?
To pick just one is difficult, but I believe the main one for me personally is increasing my observation and listening ability to understand the purpose of every engagement. It’s also the ability to be prepared for those encounters so that I can ensure that everyone’s needs are being satisfied. It’s not as straightforward as it sounds, but it is something that we can all do more of.
Another, which is particularly challenging and has happened more regularly, both during and post the pandemic, is managing change and the process involved in ensuring all is captured through each step.
What's your vision for 2024 and beyond as Innholder Scholars Chairman?
I aim to build on the quality events and learning that we have grown these past few years. The engagement of all Innholder Scholars alumni and members of the wider Master Innholders Community is key, as are our key partners such as the Institute of Hospitality.
Moving forward, the goal is to increase the visibility of this fantastic learning, development and networking opportunity by gaining an Innholder Scholarship through expanded connectivity in other hospitality and business linked groups including ‘BID’s’, University and College alumni and schools.
The St Julian Scholars meeting will take place at Pan Pacific London on Friday 8 November - what can attendees expect?
We have, year over year, developed a fantastic meeting that has promoted learning and growth while also providing great opportunities to reconnect with alumni. All are equally important and provide a great opportunity to reflect during what is normally a busy time of the year. I think we all appreciate the day to take stock and use it as an opportunity to reset. Our fantastic host at Pan Pacific London is a further reason to visit, allowing us to enjoy their fantastic hospitality for what is sure to be another fantastic event for all.
